Hello my fellow 8 classmates & Professor Betty. (If I'm correct, the 8 are Justin, Anna, Brian, Zelata, Badycak (sp?), Brittany, Bradley, & Addie). It's nice to meet you all.
For starters, I am terrified of the courtroom, lawyers, judges...even being considered for jury duty is anxiety provoking for me. As I have to go to court in August for a speeding ticket to plead guilty in front of a judge, I will likely count this as a part of my sociopolitical setting experience. I honestly cried after getting the ticket and realizing I needed to go to court. (Yes, just like Lindsay Lohan). I will have to think further to decide what my total 30 hours of fieldwork might entail...By the way, I am known to drive like a granny so I hope I'm not making a terrible first impression by admitting my speeding ticket.
Here's a little about me. I'm 28 & single. I've lived in Marina del Rey for 5 years, (since 2005). In 2005 I graduated from Pitzer College in Claremont, CA with a BA in Sociology. I grew up in New Jersey, New York City, and Connecticut. Most of my educational settings have been small. (400 people total in my high school, and 1000 students total at my undergrad school). I work as an Administrative Assistant III for two Hepatologists at the Dumont UCLA Liver Transplant Center. It's the 200 Medical Plaza Building in Westwood for those of you who might have UCLA doctors in that location. To me it's just an entry-level job where I can obtain health insurance and some income while attending school. My parents are quite displeased with my "career" thus far and are eager for me to make more money and make something of myself. So am I by the way!
Onto the pictures - 4th of July weekend I went with my immediate family (Father, Mother, and younger sister Allison, age 26) to visit Anahuac (pronounced Anuac), TX for a family reunion. It’s a very country town right on the water (no swimming due to gators), and it’s quite close to Houston. Most of the people I hadn't seen since I was about 8 years old. There were about 80 people in attendance. The one where everyone is in front of a house is significant because the house was the summer home in Beaumont, TX for my grandmother and great aunt. Basically, we are all related to Lucy Morgan Gardner, a descendent of the Gardner family, which was one of the main families to have founded Nantucket. If you go to Nantucket, they have a touristy thing called "The oldest house on Nantucket", (the pic of the house with the horseshoe on the chimney), which is in fact the oldest house on Nantucket and was the home of Coffin and Gardner families. The typical job for a man way back when was whaler, and the women were either storeowners or teachers. Oddly enough, my last name Geddie, which is Scottish, translates to basically "fishing spear". Anyway, we met in Texas because that is where most of the relatives on my Dad's side happen to live, and meeting in Nantucket would have been much more expensive, probably unaffordable for the majority of us. (Though I recommend you visit for a vacation one day if you haven't already, it's a wonderful vacation spot). At the reunion we played guessing games using CA and TX locations since most family members are in these two states. My parents are both from Oklahoma City, and met and married there, but dropped their accents and made their way into big cities such as NYC and LA.
If it's at all possible to distinguish photos in the collage, my sister is the red head singing and playing the guitar. She is an aspiring singer-songwriter and we live together. Because I love to show her off, I am including her website, www.allisongeddie.com, though you can also find her on facebook and myspace. Her song "Leave with me" was used (in it's entirety!) on the soap "All My Children", so we are very proud of her. She is currently releasing a cover of the "Kesha" song "Tic Tok" though I'm not sure it's on her sites yet. If any of you are scared of Grey's Anatomy type music and want to attend one of her open mic performances please do! At the reunion the elementary aged cousins were asking for her autograph and one boy even inquired, "Are you Taylor Swift?!"
Last but not least, the dogs, two male daschunds, are my brothers, Jerry the dark one and Jazzie the light one. They are my mom's dogs but...they are SO in love with me. For fun I enjoy singing, eating out, too much tv/film, and I guess all the usual stuff. I'm in my last quarter and have Psychology in the Community in addition to this course so it's going to be 3 months of solid field trips. I just finished a yearlong traineeship at "ECPC" (the Early Childhood Parenting Center) in Santa Monica, and just started a traineeship at "FACT" (Focus on All Child Therapies) in Westwood where I work mainly with youth diagnosed with autism (from age 3 to 20). Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in similar fieldwork settings. I hope this blog isn't too casual a format for our class. Looking forward to everyone's intro!
